The ‘Indian High Court Act’ of 1861 was issued by Her Majesty the Queen of England under the Great Seal of the United Kingdom to establish High Courts of Calcultta, Bombay and Madras. The Charter of High Court of Bombay was issued on June 26, 1862 and it was inaugurated on 14th August 1862. The Bombay High Court had authorized 15 Judges however, it started with only seven and for about 60 years High Court of Bombay managed with just 7 judges only. First it was located at Admiralty House, a building in Apollo Street, where Recorder’s court and the Supreme Court held their sittings. Later in April 1871 the work on the present building started and by the end of November 1878 it was completed. It is located between the University Building and the Public Work Secretariat. It is 562 feet in length and 187 feet in breadth. It’s height to the east is 90 feet and the Central feature is 178 ½ feet in height. It English-Gothtic design was done by Colonel J.A. Fuller, R.E. at the cost of Rs. 16,44,528. There are two private stair cases for the judges on the west side and the main staircase and entrance on the east is for the general public. Presently the strength of Mumbai High Court is of about 75 judges. The Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa have enrolled about 90,000 advocates till October 2009.

Bombay high court is one of the biggest court in the Western India and Mumbai Court reviews judgement for Goa, Daman, Diu, Aurangabad, Nagpur and one can appeal against the Mumbai high court judgment in the Supreme court.
